Ámantee is pleased to host a Bangkok Music Society Recital by Dana Garnett and Tony Newman.
Dana Garnett was born in Baton Rouge , Louisiana , USA. She was influenced by her musical family to pursue the performing arts. She studied piano with her mother, playing and singing into her teens, while at the same time becoming deeply committed to ballet. In her sophomore year of high school, Dana was among the first students to open and attend Arts Magnet High School in Dallas , Texas , which was a prototype for “magnet schools” across the country, and today is recognized as a leading preparatory performing and visual arts school. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from The University of North Texas, in Denton , Texas , among the top music schools in the Unites States. Dana chose not to make music her professional career, instead obtained a Masters Degree of Science in Accountancy, and became a Certified Public Accountant. This led her to a 12-year career with The Coca-Cola Company, where her most recent position was Facilities Management Director for Coca-Cola's Administrative Business Site in Brussels , Belgium . Meanwhile, she has kept up her music, and her experience includes: solo voice recitals, regional opera, choral groups, including a televised performance with the Brussels Choral Society, and soloist of liturgical music, most recently performing the soprano solo role in Handel's Messiah in her home base of Northern New Mexico, USA . Along with doing local volunteer work, Dana currently teaches private voice lessons in the surrounds of International School Bangkok, where she lives with her husband and her two daughters.
Tony Newman, originally from Southport in the UK , is currently based in Bangkok working as Asia Pacific Regional Actuary for a multi-national insurance company. A keen pianist since the age of four, Tony spent much of his teenage years playing in concerts and competing in music festivals around the UK , most notably reaching the semi-finals of the UK 's National Mozart Competition for Young Pianists and Regional Finals of BBC TV's Young Musician of the Year competition. During this time he was also repetiteur for a local opera production group and worked training singers for roles in performances of, amongst others, Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutte and The Magic Flute. Deciding against pursuing a musical career, he went on to study Physics at Oxford University before embarking on his career as an Actuary in the City of London . Whilst in London , he played as part of an amateur jazz band, whose claim to fame was a one-time performance at the city's celebrated Camden Jazz Cafe. Tony is also no stranger to opera stage performance. He has twice taken the role of Antonio, the drunken gardener, in productions of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro . In June of last year, Tony accompanied the opera ensembles in the BMS Concert Varié program. In October he was piano collaborator for art songs by Schumann and Schubert as well as a stunning performance of the Grieg Sonata in G minor with renowned violinist Leo Phillips in the BMS Romantic Encounter program.
The Bangkok Music Society (BMS), a non-profit organization, has been in existence for over 30 years and is committed to providing the Bangkok community with a variety of musical activities, from lectures and concerts to regular instrumental music sessions for its members. As part to the BMS commitment to raising the profile of young musicians in Thailand the BMS offers an annual scolarship to encourage the next generation of Thai musicians, help talented, less privileged musicians with the cost of music tuition, provide an opportunity for Thai musicians their profile in the musical scene of Thailand.
